Well this was certainly a surprise – and not in a good way.
We feel we must continue to make this disclaimer: We are in the finals folks. The 50 we tried were all on someone’s Top Ten list. We have had 48 really good burgers. We’d go back to any of them (except those two bad ones). We’re in the Final 15 though so we’re now comparing the best of the best. There are no bad burgers in the Top 15. Some will just rise to the top.
Hopdoddy makes good burgers. It’s been one of our mainstay burger joints since we stood in long lines at the original on South Congress in Austin. Hopdoddy coming to Dallas was a big event for us and many others. We’ve been there often and we’ll go again. But…at least this particular night they weren’t on the top of their game.
Together we tried three of their eight burgers.
Terlingua – Angus beef, Chile, Cheddar, Corn Fritos, Sassy Sauce, Lettuce, Onion, Tomato
The Classic Burger w/ cheese – Angus beef LTO & Sassy Sauce
Llano Poblano – Angus beef, Apple Smoked Bacon, Tillamook Pepper Jack, Seared Poblanos, Chipotle Mayo, LT
Their burgers are distinguished by the add-ons and they’ve put together some great combinations. You can really get a unique burger. Who can’t get excited about a burger with Fritos on top (well… Will for one but Matt and Tricia ordered it so it must have looked good). Problem is that all the burgers start with the Angus beef patty and it was rather lackluster. Nothing to really set it apart. Without a great patty can you have a great burger? We think not. Maybe good, but not great. Chalk it up to a bad night maybe. Go try it, prove us wrong. Thousands of you already have or they wouldn’t have 18 locations in Texas, Colorado, Arizona and California.
